What is the 70/20/10 model?
The 70/20/10 model suggests that:
- 70% of our knowledge comes from job-related experiences (i.e. “on-the-job learning”)
- 20% from interactions with others (i.e. “social learning”)
- 10% from training courses (i.e. “formal learning”)
These numbers come from a survey, not a scientific study, but they remind us to consider learning experiences not necessarily as courses (whether offline or online) but as more informal learning (e.g. scenario-based learning, job aids, performance support materials, coaching or mentoring, collaborative platforms, learning via knowledge creation, etc.).
